Wall mounting your TV can make a big difference to your viewing experience. Whether you're after a sleek, minimalist look or want the flexibility to tilt and swivel your screen, the right mount keeps your TV secure and your space clutter-free.
This guide will walk you through the different types of TV wall mounts, what to consider before buying, how to install one, and which options are best for your TV size and room layout.

Why choose a TV wall mount?
Wall mounting your TV offers a range of lifestyle and space-saving benefits:

  • • gives your set-up a modern, cinematic feel
  • • eliminates the need for bulky furniture
  • • hides or minimises visible cables
  • • improves your viewing angle and reduces glare
  • • keeps your TV safely out of reach of pets and children
But not all wall mounts are created equal, and the right one for you depends on where your TV is going, your wall type and how flexible you want the screen to be.

Types of TV wall mounts
There are three main types of TV wall mounts, each offering a different level of movement and flexibility. Looking for something specific? Browse all TV wall mounts.

Fixed wall mounts
Fixed mounts hold your TV flat against the wall, ideal for rooms where you’ll be watching straight on and don’t need to move the screen.
  • slim profile: Keeps your TV close to the wall for a modern, streamlined look.
  • stable and secure: Fewer moving parts means minimal risk of mechanical failure.
  • cost-effective: Usually the most affordable option.

Tilt wall mounts
Tilt mounts let you angle your TV up or down slightly. They’re perfect if your TV is mounted higher up on the wall, like above a fireplace or in a bedroom.
  • reduces glare: Angle the screen to avoid reflections
  • improves comfort: Adjust to match your seating position
  • better access: Easier to reach ports than fixed brackets

Full motion wall mounts
Also known as articulating mounts, these give you the most freedom to position your TV exactly how you like.
  • Maximum flexibility: Swivel, tilt or extend the TV out from the wall.
  • Perfect for corners: Ideal for open-plan living rooms
  • Easiest port access: Ideal if you regularly plug in consoles or other devices.

Which wall mount is right for your TV?
text

Choosing the best TV wall mount depends on your screen size, where you want to mount it and how you use it. Here’s what to keep in mind:

TV size and weight
Wall mounts are designed to support specific screen sizes and weights. Always check your TV’s size and weight, and make sure the mount is rated to support it.

  • TV size: Most brackets list compatible screen sizes, for example, “suitable for 40-70 inch TVs”.
  • weight limit: Make sure your TV doesn’t exceed the maximum load weight, this is listed on the product page under “Specifications”.
  • • check the product specifications for VESA compatibility, the standard used for mounting holes on the back of TVs.
What is VESA?
VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) defines the distance between mounting holes on the back of your TV - e.g. 200 x 200mm.
Check your TV’s manual or product listing for its VESA pattern, and ensure your chosen mount supports it. This guarantees a safe and secure fit.

VESA compatibility
Look at the back of your TV, you’ll see mounting holes in a square or rectangle pattern. This is called the VESA mount pattern, and it’s how your TV attaches to the bracket.
  • • check your TV manual or product page to find its VESA size (e.g. 200x200, 400x400).
  • • match that to the wall mount’s VESA range.
Need help? Our product pages list VESA compatibility for every mount.

TV type and ports
Some TVs have ports in awkward places or are deeper than others. If you need frequent access to HDMI or USB ports, a tilt or full motion mount will give you easier access than a fixed option.

Viewing position
Position matters more than you think. For the best experience:
  • • Mount your TV at eye level when seated, especially in living rooms.
  • • If mounting higher (like above a fireplace), choose a tilt mount to angle the screen downward.
  • • Avoid placing your TV where it’ll reflect direct sunlight or lamps.

Wall type
Not all mounts work on all wall types. Here's what to check:
  • Solid walls (brick or concrete): Can handle any type of mount.
  • Plasterboard (drywall): Best used with fixed mounts or mounts specially designed for lightweight TVs. Make sure to use appropriate fixings.
If in doubt, check the product guide or consult a professional.

TV wall mount installation: what to expect
text

You don’t always need a professional, many TV wall mounts can be installed with a few tools and a bit of time. But there are a few key steps and things to consider:

What’s included?
Most mounts come with the basic parts you’ll need, including:

  • • Bracket and arms
  • • Screws and wall plugs
  • • Instructions
  • • Spacers and washers

You’ll need some tools of your own:
  • • Electric drill
  • • Spirit level
  • • Screwdriver
  • • Pencil for marking
  • • Stud finder for plasterboard walls
  • • A second pair of hands for larger TVs

Step-by-step installation
  • 1. Choose your position. Make sure it’s eye-level from your main seating spot and free from glare.
  • 2. Mark your holes. Use a spirit level to keep things straight.
  • 3. Drill and fix. Attach the wall plate securely, using the right plugs for your wall type.
  • 4. Attach the bracket. Screw the mount onto the back of your TV using the correct VESA holes.
  • 5. Lift and hang. Carefully lift and hook your TV onto the mount. Get someone to help for larger TVs.
  • 6. Check stability. Gently test the movement to ensure it is secure.
  • 7. Organise cables. Use clips or trunking to tidy up your cables.
Pro tip: Not sure you’re comfortable doing this yourself? Consider asking a professional for help, especially for larger or heavier TVs.

Cable management tips
Wall mounts don’t always hide cables by default. If you’re after a clean, cable-free look:
  • • Use a cable cover or raceway to tidy up wires along the wall.
  • • Choose a mount with built-in cable management features.
  • • Consider routing cables behind the wall if you’re doing a bigger renovation.
