What is broadband?
Broadband is a term that’s used for a high-speed internet connection; a method of receiving and sending data. Broadband is available through multiple technology types, including cable, fibre optics, Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) and DSL – all of which enable you to get connected on multiple devices. Home broadband is the internet connection cabled to your home and converted into WiFi through a wireless router.

There are a number of factors to think about when looking for a new broadband package. Here are the most important things to think about:

Speed
Often the most important factor in choosing a broadband deal is the speed. Speed dictates how quickly your internet will run as well as how many people can use it. People that like online gaming often need higher speeds.

With speed, there’s a number of questions you may have:

What broadband speed do I need?
Broadband speed is measured in Megabits per second (Mbps). A good broadband speed depends on what you do online; streaming in HD and working from home every day needs minimum 25 to 100 Mbps. Gaming, 4K streaming and a house full of smart devices all at once will use far more, so full fibre speeds above 100 Mbps are a safer bet. EE Full Fibre goes up to 1.6Gbps.

What broadband speed can I get?
The type of broadband you can get depends on where you live. Standard broadband is slower because it’s delivered with copper wires, whereas fibre and full fibre broadband use fibre-optic cables that enable faster speeds. Fibre broadband is now available to most of the UK, which means you’re likely to get broadband speeds of at least 25 Mbps. Full fibre, if built in your area, gives you the fastest speeds. If you don’t want or can’t get fixed broadband, 4G or 5G home broadband can get you connected with good speeds through the mobile data network.

What comes with every EE Broadband plan?
Every EE Full Fibre plan comes with a WiFi 7 enabled Smart Hub 7 Plus, our most powerful router. You also get real-time protection that blocks dodgy websites, and WiFi Controls so you can pause the connection to any device from the EE app. AI-driven WiFi monitoring spots and fixes problems in the background. Unlimited downloads and a Speed Guarantee come as standard. Part fibre plans come with the Smart Hub 6 Plus.

What is WiFi 7 and do I need it?
WiFi 7 is the newest generation of WiFi technology, around twice as capable as WiFi 6. It carries more data at once, so you get faster speeds further from your hub and less congestion when everyone is online. The average UK home now has more than 25 connected devices, so that extra headroom matters. You don't need to replace your gadgets to feel the difference, and WiFi 7 comes as standard with our Smart Hub 7 Plus.

What is the EE Speed Guarantee?
The Speed Guarantee is the minimum speed we promise to deliver to your hub, rather than to individual devices over WiFi. Every plan has its own figure, so Full Fibre 900 comes with a 700Mbps Speed Guarantee. If the speed test in the EE app shows you're consistently below it, get in touch and we'll run diagnostics or arrange an engineer visit. If we still can't fix it, you can leave your contract without paying an early exit charge.

How long is an EE Broadband contract?
You can choose between a 12 and a 24 month contract. Our 24 month deals work out cheaper each month, so they suit people who are settled. The 12 month contracts cost a little more but give you more flexibility, which makes them popular with renters and students. Prices change once a year on 31 March, and we'll show you what your plan will cost before you sign up.

Will I need an engineer visit?
Most people won't. If your home already has full fibre with working Openreach equipment, we can connect you remotely. Your hub arrives in the post, you plug it in on your start date and you're away. If full fibre has never reached your property, an Openreach engineer will come out to install it, which takes up to three hours and involves work inside and outside your home.

How long until I’m online?
You'll choose your installation date when you order, and most orders are up and running within a couple of weeks. If an engineer visit is needed, that appointment date is when you go live. Your engineer will call ahead so you know when to expect them.

Is EE Broadband unlimited?
Yes. Every EE broadband plan comes with unlimited downloads, so there's no monthly data cap and no extra charges for using more. Stream, game and work from home as much as you like. The only real difference between plans is speed, so if lots of devices are online at once, look at a faster full fibre plan.

Cost
The monthly cost of your broadband is for most people the determining factor in signing up. Therefore, ensuring the cost is right for you and your budget is vital for a good experience. We ensure our prices are competitive with no compromise on service.

Availability
As our partners at BT and Openreach roll out Full Fibre to the entire country, people are being given more options for their broadband package. However, currently not all deals are available to everyone. So our handy postcode checker will be able to give you more information on what broadband deals are available to you.

Usage
What are you planning on using your broadband for? A real heavy user might want to consider a higher speed, a more casual user could consider a cheaper deal with just the right bandwidth for them. Broadband is available in varying forms with different speeds possible, the main types we offer are:

Full fibre broadband
The fastest and most reliable broadband we offer with speeds of up to 1.6Gbps possible our full fibre connections use fibre optic cables connecting directly to your home to maximise speeds and reliability.

Fibre broadband
Also known as fibre to the cabinet. Fibre broadband is faster than standard broadband. This is because the fibre optic cabling only connects to the street cabinet. Fibre broadband is usually cheaper and more readily available but is slower than full fibre.

Mobile broadband
This type of broadband uses our mobile network to give you an internet connection wherever you have a mobile signal. It can also be used as a ‘backup’ for your main broadband connection ensuring you’re never without broadband.

Outside of what EE offers you can also get:

ADSL broadband
Otherwise known as ‘Standard Broadband’ this is internet delivered through the old copper wiring. Often the cheapest broadband but with the slowest speeds.

Satellite broadband
This is internet delivered by satellite and is an option if you’re in a particularly difficult place. This is often more expensive than other forms of broadband and usually has data limits.

Cable broadband
Very much like our connection but instead of using fibre optics it uses a coaxial cable and isn’t as widely available.

Most of our packages don’t include any upfront costs. Some of our packages include a one-off cost or a broadband activation fee this is normally added to your first monthly bill.
