Is the iPhone XS waterproof or water resistant?
It’s important to know that although the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max both boast IP68 water and dust resistance, it doesn’t mean they’re waterproof. So before we go any further, it’s worth explaining what these official ratings actually mean.
Dust- and water-resistance ratings in a nutshell
The IP standards were drawn up by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to provide an industry-standard definition of protection against dust and water contamination. And it’s a pretty simple system to follow. The first digit after IP refers to the device’s dust resistance, and the second digit refers to its water resistance.
So with an IP68 rating, the 6 means your device is “protected from contact with harmful dust”. And the 8 means your device is “protected from immersion in water with a depth of more than 1 metre where the manufacturer specifies the exact depth”, which, in the case of Apple, is 2 metres.
How long can my iPhone XS be immersed in water
If you’ve dropped your iPhone XS in water that’s less than 2m deep, it shouldn’t suffer any long-term harm if you retrieve it within half an hour. Bear in mind, phones are tested in stand-by mode. We don’t recommend using your iPhone XS underwater, or taking it for a swim.

What should I do if my iPhone XS gets water damaged?
If you think your iPhone XS is water damaged there are a number of things you should do.
- Don’t plug it in – even if you think your battery might be flat, resist the urge to hook up to a power supply until its fully dry
- Turn it off, remove any case, and remove the SIM
- Remove the moisture with packets of silica gel – if you don’t have any to hand, stick it in a bowl of rice
