Family business improves profitability and no longer spends long hours on job administration
West Yorkshire family business Varley Boiler Services repairs and installs industrial boilers across the country. It’s very important the company’s employees are able to present all the relevant compliance documentation, risk assessments, method statements, repair procedures and weld certification at arrival on site.
“It doesn’t matter if the person has 20 years’ experience in our trade. Without the right paperwork the job won’t start,” explains managing director John Varley.
Working remotely over a 3G network slowed performance so, instead, John was spending around three hours a night emailing documentation to clients and boiler insurance companies ahead of every job. Even then, staff still regularly encountered problems and delays when they turned up on site the next morning.

For example, while being driven to a site in London by a colleague, he received a call from an engineer on site in Nottingham who required further documentation to comply with the client’s site requirements. John was able to access the material within minutes and email it over – all from his smartphone – which enabled the engineer to carry out the task in hand. He sums up: “4GEE is saving us about 30 per cent of our time and making the business noticeably more profitable.”
