5G is making its way around the UK, but it’s not the end for 4G! 4G is still the bedrock of our network, connecting people to the services they need and love, right across the UK.

Every day, we’re building new 4G sites in rural parts of the UK, giving communities a digital connection for the first time.

Unlike 3G to 4G, 5G is not a replacement for 4G. It adds another layer to the network to provide more capacity in the busiest parts of the UK’s busiest cities. Our 5G routers switch between 4G and 5G depending on signal strength.

How does a 4G router work and what does it do?

4G routers pick up internet just like your phone does, they’re just more powerful. They use the 4G mobile network instead of standard phone lines or cables, so you don’t need a fixed landline.

How do 5G routers work?

5G routers work exactly like 4G routers: they use the mobile network to get you connected to the internet. The difference is that 5G routers can connect to the best available network (5G), switching between 4G and 5G to provide you with the optimal broadband speed.

Is a 4G router better than hotspot?

If you need consistent broadband, getting a 4G router is better than using your mobile hotspot. EE 4G routers give you a significantly better signal with a 30m WiFi range, and you can connect up to 32 devices at once – hotspot isn’t strong enough for this.

How do you know if your router is 5G?
