You might need a roaming data add-on if you’re travelling outside the EU and want to use the internet on your phone. Find out more about how they work.

Why do I need a roaming data add-on?

Why do I need a roaming data add-on?

You only need a data add-on if you’re roaming outside of the EU. If you travel outside the EU and your plan doesn’t include roaming, you’ll only be able to access the internet via a WiFi connection, not on a mobile network — but we won’t charge you for that.

When should I buy a roaming data add-on?

When should I buy a roaming data add-on?

You can buy a roaming data add-on before you travel or once you’re out there.

If you buy while you’re abroad, the price will vary depending on which country you’re visiting – we’ll text you the details once you’ve landed.

Once you’ve chosen the right add-on for you, you can get online and use apps, just like you do at home. All our roaming data add-ons give you access to 4G on 80 networks abroad – and growing.

Good to know

To keep track of how much data you’ve got left (and how long you’ve got left to use it), just go to add-on.ee.co.uk/status on your EE device.

Do I have roaming data included in my plan?

All our plans now include EU roaming data.

If you have a Max plan that started on or after 10 May 2017, you can use your allowances in over 50 countries, including North America, Australia and New Zealand (as well as the whole of EU).

None of our plans will charge you after you’ve used up your inclusive data. Instead, we’ll ask if you want to buy another roaming add-on.

What’s the best roaming data add-on?

What’s the best roaming data add-on?

For popular destinations outside Europe, our best value add-on is the Travel Data Pass. It gives you:

  • 500MB of data for just £4.80 a day in the USA and Canada
  • 500MB of data for £6 a day in Australia, China, India, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey and the UAE
  • 150MB of data for £6 a day in 45 destinations including Brazil, Bangladesh, Japan and Jamaica

Once you’ve added Travel Data Pass, you’ll only ever pay for the days you use data abroad. And there’s no need to cancel the add-on when you return home. Simply keep it in the background and it will automatically activate next time you use data on your travels.

If this isn't for you, you can choose one of our standard roaming data add-ons when you use our roaming tool.

How to buy a roaming data add-on

You can only buy a standard roaming data add-on when you arrive abroad.

Depending on the country you’re visiting, you buy an add-on by going to add-on.ee.co.uk/status on your phone or by sending us a text message.

You’ll get full details in the text message you receive from EE when you switch your phone on abroad.

It’s easy to buy our Travel Data Pass before you go or while you’re away, just text TRAVEL to 150.

If you're travelling outside Europe or Data Travel Pass countries, use our roaming tool to check out costs and data options for your destination.

Take care with your data use

Streaming videos or music, playing online games and uploading or downloading files all use lots of data. So does keeping apps open in the background.

To get the most out of your data add-on, check your device’s settings to see which apps use data in the background. You can also try not to download files unless you’re connected to WiFi.
