The Bright Box 2 supports multiple (four) wireless network names (SSIDs). This article shows you how to set up more wireless network names with separate wireless passwords and home network addresses. This is useful when:
- You only want to give somebody temporary access to your home network - you can then regularly change the password without disconnecting all of your own wireless devices.
- You want to keep files you've shared on your home network separate from other people.
- You want to limit the amount of bandwidth a certain person (or group of people) can use on your home network.
Set up new wireless network name
To do this from a computer connected to your Bright Box router:
- Go to 192.168.1.1 (opens in a new tab or window)
- The router's LOGIN SCREEN will open
- Enter the username and password for the admin pages
- The username is admin (all lower case)
- The password can be found on a sticker on the bottom of your router
- Select LOGIN
- The STATUS page will open
- Select ADVANCED from the menu and click ACCEPT
- Select Wireless Settings, and then SSID Management in the left hand menu
- The SSID MANAGEMENT page will open
- In the Multiple SSID No. menu, select 2
- Global settings can be left as default
- Enter a name for your new wireless network - in the example below we named the SSID GuestWiFi
- Check the option to enable Broadcast SSID
- Select the level of security you want for the network - we recommend WPA and WPA/WPA2 MIXED MODE
- For Authentication select Wireless Password
- For Wireless Password Type - select Passphrase
- Enter a Wireless Password for your new network - this needs to be 8-63 characters
- Optional - if you want to keep your home network separate to GuestWiFi, select VLAN2 in the SSID2 field under VLAN Binding
- Under 5GHz SETTINGS, you can also choose to enable settings
- Click SAVE SETTINGS
- Your new settings will be saved.
- That's it - you can now refresh your computer's wireless software and connect to your new wireless network name
- You'll find you now have a standard 2.4GHz wireless network, and also a 5GHz network starting 5GHz-... if you enabled this option
Limit the bandwidth
If you want to limit the amount of bandwidth available to SSID2, you can limit the downstream and upstream connection speed. In the example below, we've limited the downstream to 1024kbps and the upstream to 512kbps.
- Select Bandwidth Control from the wireless menu
- Under Bandwidth Control (2.4GHz), go to the SSID No. that you want to limit data for - in the example below this is SSID2
- Click to tick Enable in the Upstream and Downstream field
- In the SSID2 upstream enter 512
- In the SSID2 downstream Kbytes/sec field enter 1024
- Repeat these steps for Bandwidth Control (5GHz)
- Click SAVE SETTINGS
- Your new settings will be applied
