FAQs

The Bravia 8 XR80 features a 55" OLED panel with over 8 million self-illuminating pixels, each capable of switching off independently to produce absolute black. This delivers near-infinite contrast, perfect shadow detail and incredibly vibrant colours, all from almost any viewing angle. Sony enhances this with XR OLED Contrast Pro and XR Contrast Booster 15, boosting peak brightness by approximately 10% over previous-generation Sony OLED models for even more impressive highlights.

The Bravia 8 XR80 is powered by Sony’s XR Processor. It uses AI to cross-analyse the picture, detecting objects, colours, depth and motion simultaneously, then applies precise enhancements that reflect how humans perceive images. Content is upscaled close to 4K quality regardless of its original resolution, while picture modes such as Cinema and Professional are tuned for studios, ensuring what you see is as close as possible to what the creators intended.

The Bravia 8 XR80 supports HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision. The OLED panel’s absolute black levels combined with Dolby Vision’s dynamic metadata make this one of the most expressive HDR displays available. IMAX Enhanced is also supported and there is a dedicated Dolby Vision Game mode for HDR gaming. Studio Calibrated, Cinema, Professional and Artist picture profiles let you match the display to any viewing preference.

The Bravia 8 XR80 is a strong gaming TV. It supports 4K gaming at up to 120fps with VRR, ALLM and SBTM via HDMI 2.1. Note that only 2 of the 4 HDMI ports offer full HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) bandwidth, while the other 2 support up to 18Gbps. Input lag at 4K/120fps is approximately 4.5ms, making it responsive for fast-paced games. PlayStation 5 owners get exclusive features including Auto HDR Tone Mapping, Auto Genre Picture Mode and Dolby Vision for Gaming.

Acoustic Surface Audio+ is Sony’s technology that makes the OLED screen itself the speaker. Actuators behind the panel vibrate the glass surface to produce sound that comes directly from the action on screen, keeping dialogue and sound effects synchronised with the images. The whole-screen speaker system supports a 2.1-channel configuration with a total output of 50W and handles Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for full spatial audio depth.

Yes. The Bravia 8 XR80 runs Google TV, bringing all your streaming services together in 1 customisable home screen. Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video, YouTube and thousands of other apps are available. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa provide hands-free voice search across services. Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast are built in, so you can cast or mirror content from any Apple or Android device with ease.

Yes. The Bravia 8 XR80 supports eARC on 1 of its HDMI ports, allowing full high-quality audio, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, to pass to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver with a single HDMI cable. There is also an optical digital audio output. With a compatible Sony BRAVIA home cinema system, you can use Acoustic Center Sync to turn the TV into a centre channel speaker and create a wider, more cohesive surround sound stage.

The Bravia 8 XR80 offers a wide range of picture modes: Vivid, Standard, Cinema, Professional, Calm, Photo, IMAX Enhanced, Dolby Vision Vivid, Bright, Dark and Game, FPS Game and RTS Game. Cinema and Professional modes are calibrated to industry standards so films and dramas are displayed with accurate colour and contrast, while FPS Game and RTS Game modes reduce input lag and sharpen fast-moving images for a competitive edge.

Both are Sony’s premium TVs, but they use different display technologies. The Bravia 8 XR80 is an OLED TV, offering perfect black levels, infinite contrast and superior viewing angles. The Bravia 9 XR90 is a Mini LED QLED TV, delivering significantly higher peak brightness with XR Contrast Booster 30 versus the XR80’s 15. For dark-room cinema viewing, the Bravia 8’s OLED is exceptional. For bright rooms or those wanting the most luminous image possible, the Bravia 9 XR90 is the stronger performer.

The Bravia 8 XR80 features built-in WiFi with WiFi 5 support and Bluetooth, as well as a wired Ethernet port for a more stable network connection. Chromecast is built in for casting from Android and Google devices, and Apple AirPlay 2 lets you stream directly from iPhone, iPad or Mac. These wireless options make it straightforward to connect with your other tech at home without running additional cables across the room.
