Microsoft Surface 3 - Join to a domain

A network domain is a group of computers that share resources like folders, databases, and printers. To access resources on a domain, you need to join your Surface to the domain and sign in with a domain user name and password.

  • You need to install Windows 10 Pro Pack before you can join your Surface 3 to a domain.
  • For a limited time, Surface 3 comes with one year of Office 365 Personal. Before installing the Windows 10 Pro Pack, make sure to activate and install Office 365; otherwise, you won’t be able to activate your free subscription.

If you need to join your Surface 3 to a domain at an organization, such as your workplace, check with your IT department to see if it has a Windows 10 Pro Pack product key you can use to install the Pro Pack.

If you have a Surface 3, your IT department may already have installed a domain-join-capable version of Windows. Here’s how to check:

Step 1: Go to Start Windows logo, and select Settings > System > About.
Step 2: Next to Edition, look to see which edition of Windows is running on your Surface.
  • If you have Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise, your Surface 3 can join a domain.
  • If you have Windows 10 Home, you need to install the Windows 10 Pro Pack before your Surface 3 can join a domain.

Surface Pro models and Surface Book. You can join your Surface Pro model or Surface Book to a domain.

Join a domain

Check with your organization’s IT department or your network admin for specific info on how to join your Surface to a domain. The info you need includes the specific steps you must take in order to connect and things like the name of the domain, your domain user account info (user name and password), and possibly a computer name assigned to your Surface.

Connect your Microsoft account to your domain account

You can connect your Microsoft account to your domain account. Once connected, you can access your OneDrive folders and sync your settings, preferences, browser history, and favorites across all the PCs you use with your Microsoft account.

To connect your Microsoft account to your domain account, log in to your Surface with your domain account and open the Windows Store or another app such as Groove Music, Movies & TV, or Xbox. The app will prompt you to enter your Microsoft account user name and password. Enter your user name and password and follow the on-screen instructions to connect your account.
