Choosing the right wireless headphones is about matching the features to your needs. Here’s what to think about before you buy.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): If you'll be listening in noisy environments like on a train or plane, ANC is a game-changing feature that actively blocks out external sounds.

Form Factor: Decide between over-ear, on-ear, or in-ear (wireless earphones). Over-ears offer the best sound isolation, while in-ears are the most portable and best for sports.

Controls: Consider how you want to control your music and calls. Options range from physical buttons to intuitive touch controls and voice assistant integration.

Water Resistance (IP Rating): If you plan to use your headphones for exercise, look for an IP rating (e.g., IPX4 or higher) which indicates resistance to sweat and water.

FAQs

What is the difference between Wireless Headphones and True Wireless Earphones?

"Wireless headphones" is a broad category. "True wireless earphones" are a specific type with no wires at all, where each earbud is a separate, independent unit (like AirPods). Other wireless headphones might have a wire or band connecting the two earbuds.

How long does the battery last on wireless headphones?

Battery life varies greatly by model. Over-ear headphones can last 20-60 hours, while true wireless earbuds typically offer 4-8 hours of playback, with additional charge stored in their carrying case.

Can I use wireless headphones with my TV?

Yes, if your TV has built-in bluetooth. If not, you may need a separate Bluetooth transmitter that plugs into your TV's audio output jack.

What is a Bluetooth codec (like aptX or LDAC) and why does it matter?

A codec is how audio is compressed and sent from your device to your headphones. Advanced codecs like aptX and LDAC can transmit higher quality audio than the standard SBC codec, resulting in better sound, but both your device and headphones must support them.

Do wireless headphones have a microphone for calls?

Yes, virtually all wireless headphones and earphones have built-in microphones for making phone calls and using voice assistants.

What is 'latency' and is it a problem for wireless headphones?

Latency is the slight delay between the video you see and the audio you hear. While it has improved significantly, a small delay can still exist, which might be noticeable in competitive gaming. For watching movies or listening to music, it's generally not an issue.

Can I connect wireless headphones to more than one device at a time?

Many modern headphones support 'Bluetooth Multipoint,' which allows them to be actively connected to two devices (like a laptop and a phone) at the same time, seamlessly switching between them.

How do I charge my wireless headphones?

Most are charged via a USB-C or Micro-USB cable. True wireless earbuds are charged by placing them back into their portable charging case.

Are wireless headphones good for exercise?

Many are, especially in-ear models designed for a secure fit and with a high IP rating for sweat and water resistance. Over-ear models can be bulky and less stable for vigorous activity.

What happens if the battery dies?

Some over-ear wireless headphones come with an audio cable, allowing you to plug them in and use them as wired headphones if the battery runs out. For true wireless earbuds, you'll need to recharge them in their case.
