What is 5G?
Why 5G on EE
We've been awarded the UK's best network for nine years in a row and have an unbeatable 5G network.
Why we've got the UK's best network
The fastest overall network in the UK
We have the fastest overall median download speeds in the UK, according to RootMetrics’ testing conducted during the first half of 2022.
We have the fastest average download speeds in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and recorded the fastest median UK-wide speeds of 66.23 Mbps.
That’s more than twice as fast as any other UK network. With the fastest overall speeds on EE (4G and 5G combined), you’ll download content quicker and get the best quality video.
The best overall network in the UK
In the first half of 2022, RootMetrics conducted approximately 650,000 tests around the UK (4G and 5G combined), including 16 major cities.
The results concluded that EE is:
- The UK’s best network, 9 years in a row
- The UK’s most reliable network
- The UK’s fastest network
- The UK’s best network for accessibility
- The UK’s best network for data
- The UK’s best network for calls
- Unbeatable network for gaming
5G in more major cities than any other network
We have 5G in more places in the UK than any other network, according to RootMetrics testing conducted during the second half of 2021.
When RootMetrics measured the percentage of tests conducted entirely on a 5G network in the UK, it found EE had the most with 41% of all tests.
That’s more connections on 5G on EE than any other network, so you can be confident you’ll get a great connection on the go.
Get 5G ready
- How does 5G work
5G works in the same way as existing mobile networks. You can connect to a 5G network via a 5G-enabled device.
- How fast is 5G?
5G brings many benefits, including download speeds and capacity. You can expect average 5G speeds of over 100Mbps and download films in just a few minutes instead of 15 minutes on 4G.
Whether you’re opening apps and web pages or playing the latest high-resolution game on your phone, everything will feel super-quick. What’s more, a near-instant connection opens up possibilities for exciting new augmented and virtual reality experiences on your smartphone.
- Does 5G use more data than 4G?
5G doesn't use more data but lets you do more with your device. So you might use more data naturally. For example, if you stream video content at the highest resolution, you'll use more data than streaming content at a lower resolution on 4G.
- Do I need 5G?
5G is the future of mobile network technology. You can stream videos faster than 4G, download the biggest blockbusters in seconds and hit your high scores playing high-res games on the go. It’s also about connectivity.
5G has much more capacity, allowing more connections in busy places. And with near-instant connections, 5G brings the possibility of exciting new AR and VR experiences to your phone.
- Is my phone 5G ready?
- How to turn on 5G on my phone?
If you’re in an area with 5G and have a 5G SIM, 5G will automatically switch on and be ready to use. If there’s an issue with your connection, check your mobile network settings on your phone.
- Will a 5G phone work in a 4G area?
5G works hand-in-hand with 4G. When you connect to 5G on EE, you’ll automatically connect to 4G and 5G parts of the network simultaneously - combining the power of 4G and 5G.
However, 5G isn’t a replacement for 4G – it’s an addition to our existing award-winning network. Check 5G coverage in your area using our coverage map.
