Roaming on a Safer SIM plan

If your child is using a Safer SIM, this article gives you information about using their phone abroad, including how to avoid unexpected charges.

Pay monthly plans

Your child can only roam when they connect to a network in the EU, and not anywhere else in the world. When they connect to that network, they may not be protected with the same parental controls they would in the UK.

You’ll pay the daily EU roaming charge for them to roam. Use our roaming calculator to check how much it’ll be.

They can still connect to a WiFi network when abroad. If they do, parental controls won’t work. So, your child may see harmful or inappropriate content. Find out how to set controls on their devices and apps.

Need to know

You can't buy a roaming pass for a Safer SIM plan.

Get ready to roam

Roaming is automatically switched on when you take out a Safer SIM plan, but you may need to check some other settings.

If you're having trouble roaming in the EU, make sure the phone is set up to roam.

Switch roaming off

If you want to control what your child spends on roaming, the best way to do this is by changing their Spend Cap. Setting the cap to £0 means you can't be charged the daily EU roaming charge. This means they won't be able to use data, minutes or texts.

To stop them being able to roam without changing their Spend Cap, speak to an EE Guide who can block it on your account for their number.

They'll still be able to connect to WiFi if you switch roaming off or change their Spend Cap. This means they'll be able to use the internet without any parental controls. They'll also be able to make calls and send texts through apps that use the internet, like WhatsApp.

Find out more about parental controls you can set on their apps and phone.

Pay as you go plans

You have a pay as you go plan if you top up for your child to get their minutes, texts and data every 30 days.

Roaming won’t work if you’re on one of these Safer SIM plans. The SIM won’t connect to a network outside of the UK. They’ll still be able to connect to WiFi.

If they do connect to a WiFi network, parental controls won’t work. So, your child may see harmful or inappropriate content. Find out how to set up controls on their devices and apps in our guide.
