RCS messaging

Types of messaging service

Rich Communication Services (RCS)

RCS is a messaging service that uses data, rather than a mobile network, to:

  • share files and photos 
  • see when someone is typing a message
  • receive read receipts for messages
  • join group chats

If you have limited data allowances, you may want to turn it off.

Short Message Service (SMS)

Standard text messaging service using a mobile network.

Multimedia Message Service (MMS)

A messaging service which allows you to send images, videos and files using a mobile network.

Benefits of RCS messaging

RCS messages have fewer limits on file sizes and allow you to send better quality images and videos. They also allow businesses to send information to customers, such as:

  • event tickets
  • boarding passes
  • medical appointments and reminders
  • How to videos

How to check and turn off RCS messaging

If you want to check it's switched on, or turn off RCS messaging, follow these steps.

  1. Go into your phone settings.
  2. Select Messages.
  3. Find RCS messaging.
  4. Select to turn it on or off.

Phone settings may vary. If you can’t find it, search RCS in your settings. If you do not have iOS 18, you won't be able to use RCS messaging on an iPhone. For more information visit Apple support
