Keep your mobile phone safe
- Stay alert when using your phone in public, especially when entering your PIN or passcode.
- Shield your screen when unlocking your device.
- Don’t leave any device unattended or in plain sight.
- Avoid carrying your device in open bags or easy-to-reach pockets.
- Watch out for distractions, some thieves work in pairs to divert your attention.
- Set a strong PIN, password or biometric lock (like fingerprint or face ID).
- Turn on Find My Device (or Find My iPhone) so you can track, lock or wipe your phone if it’s lost or stolen.
- Turn off message previews on your lock screen to keep sensitive info private.
- Set up a security lock that only you know.
- Use iCloud (Apple) or your Google account (Android) to back up your phone automatically.
- You can also back up your phone by connecting it to a computer.
- Use strong, unique passwords for important apps like banking or digital wallets.
- Turn on biometric login where available.
- Avoid using autofill or keychain features for sensitive apps.
- Enable multi-factor authentication that doesn’t rely on your phone or email.
- Avoid saving photos or scans of passports, driving licences or other official ID on your phone or email without extra security.
- Add your device to immobilise, the UK’s free property register. It helps police return your phone if it’s lost or stolen.
Keep these details safe
Note down and keep details of your device, such as:
- your phone's make and model
- your phone number
- your device's IMEI number, you can get this from the settings or dial *#06# from the keypad
- 0800 800 150 - our contact centre details for lost or stolen mobiles
Put this somewhere, not your phone. If your device is lost or stolen; set up a voicemail PIN that only you know.
