What is Fibre broadband?

Our most widespread broadband use fibre cables to send signals to a cabinet on your street. The result is reliable, superfast broadband, with average speeds up to 67Mbps. We’re also rapidly rolling out Full Fibre across the country, bringing ultrafast speeds direct to your front door.

It’s easy to switch to EE. Simply place your broadband order and we’ll cancel your old contract for you. If you have TV or you are with Virgin Media, you’ll need to cancel this yourself.

We guarantee the speed to your hub. Check your speed using the EE app, online or by calling 0800 800 150. If after 30 days we can’t get you back to the speed we promised you may be able to exit your contract without paying a charge for cancelling it early. Excludes outages, connection faults and home wiring outside of EE’s control.

Installing fibre broadband for the first time requires an engineer to set up a connection in your local green cabinet. If there’s no existing line from the cabinet to you, an engineer will need to visit your property.

Speed: Fibre broadband is faster than standard (ADSL) broadband, however, it’s slower than full fibre broadband. This is due to fibre broadbands use of fibre optic cabling only as far as the cabinet. Despite this fibre optic broadband can still reach speeds of 330Mbps. So, if speed is less of a concern, then EE Fibre broadband could be just right for you.

Availability: Fibre broadband is more readily available across the country. Despite this, it’s always worth checking what fibre broadband is available in your area using our postcode checker.

Upgrades: Although fibre broadband will most likely give you the speeds you need, it’s also important to consider if, when and how you can upgrade to a faster connection.

Whilst standard broadband is delivered over copper wire fibre broadband uses faster and more reliable fibre-optic cables. The most common way fibre broadband reaches your home is via the green cabinet in your street (FTTC broadband) this is where there are fibre-optic cables up to the local green cabinet and the original copper cables are then used between the cabinet and your home. Although this approach is faster than traditional broadband it still doesn’t reach the speeds of Full Fibre Broadband.
