Set up and use an eSIM

This article explains what an eSIM is, compatible devices, how to set one up, transfer an eSIM between devices and order a replacement.

An eSIM stores the data your device needs to use the EE network. ‘eSIM’ means an embedded SIM, but unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM is already built into your device. It also means you can have multiple lines on a device.

eSIM-compatible devices

The following devices are compatible with eSIM:

  • iPhone 16, 15, 14, 13, 12 & SE; iPad Pro 3rd generation or later; iPad mini 5th generation or later; iPad Air 3rd generation or later; iPad 7th generation; iPad Pro (M4) 13-inch and 11-inch; and iPad Air (M2) 13-inch and 11-inch models are eSIM only
  • all Google Pixel devices from Pixel 3 onwards
  • Samsung devices including S20, S21, Z Flip, Fold, Note
  • Oppo devices including N2 Flip, Fine X5 & X5 Pro, Fine X3 Pro
  • Motorola Razr (2020) is eSIM only
  • cellular-enabled Windows laptop or tablet

If you're unsure if your device supports eSIM, see our device guides, or check its specifications with the device manufacturer.

Get an eSIM

If you’re new to EE and have ordered an eSIM with your device directly from us, you’ll either:

  • be sent a scannable QR code with your new device, or
  • you need to turn on your new device and follow the prompts to install your eSIM

If you’ve ordered an eSIM for a SIM only plan with us, you can download your eSIM by logging in to EE. Follow the instructions in your confirmation email. If you’re using the EE app, make sure you’re using the latest version.

If you're upgrading to a newer iPhone model, you can convert your physical SIM to an eSIM or transfer your eSIM as part of the Quick Start set up on your new iPhone. Both the old and new iPhone will need to be on iOS 15.4 or above.

If you’ve upgraded your EE device and had an eSIM before, you’ll need to log in to EE and order a replacement eSIM to download to your new device.

How to set up an eSIM

You will need a WiFi or a mobile data connection to download your eSIM.

If you’ve been sent a paper QR code, scan it and follow the prompts on your device. The information stored in it will allow us to add the eSIM to your device safely and securely.

If you selected an eSIM and haven’t been sent a paper QR code, switch on your new device and follow the onscreen prompts. For more information, select your device type from the list below:

If you're upgrading to an iPhone 13 or above, you can convert your physical SIM into an eSIM. Check out our iPhone help pages to see how to do this.
