What is an eSIM?

Like a traditional SIM card, an eSIM stores the data your device needs to use the EE network. ‘eSIM’ simply means an embedded SIM, but unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM is already built into your device. It also allows you to have multiple lines on a device, that you can switch between.

What devices can I use eSIM with?

The following devices are compatible with eSIM:

  • All iPhone models from XS onwards (XS, 11, 12, SE 2020 etc).
  • All Google Pixel devices from Pixel 3 onwards (3, 3A, 4, 4A, 5 etc).
  • Many new Samsung devices (including S20, S21, Z Flip, Fold, Note).
  • New Oppo devices (including N2 Flip, Fine X5 & X5 Pro, Fine X3 Pro).
  • The Motorola Razr (2020) is eSIM only.

If you're not sure if your device supports eSIM, check its specifications with the manufacturer. Or check our device guides.

How do I get an eSIM?

If you’re new to EE and have ordered an eSIM with your pay monthly device directly from us, you’ll either:

  • be sent a scannable QR code with your new device, or
  • you simply need to turn on your new device and follow the prompts to install your eSIM

If you’ve ordered an eSIM for a SIM only plan with us, you’ll be able to download your eSIM by logging in to EE. Simply follow the instructions in your confirmation email. If you’re using the EE app, make sure you’re using the latest version.

If you're upgrading to a newer iPhone model, you can convert your physical SIM to an eSIM or transfer your eSIM as part of the Quick Start set up on your new iPhone. Both the old and new iPhone will need to be on iOS 15.4 or above.

If you’ve upgraded your EE device and had an eSIM before, you’ll need to log in to EE and order a replacement eSIM to download to your new device.

How do I set up an eSIM?

You will need a WiFi or a mobile data connection to download your eSIM.

If you’ve been sent a paper QR code, just simply scan it and follow the ‘on device’ prompts. The information stored in it will allow us to add the eSIM to your device safely and securely.

If you selected an eSIM and haven’t been sent a paper QR code, simply switch on your new device and follow the onscreen prompts. For more information select your device type from the list below:

Can I transfer my SIM or eSIM to my new phone?

Yes, if you already have a SIM or eSIM with us, there's a couple of ways you can transfer it.

If you're upgrading your iPhone, just fire up your new iPhone and follow the Quick Start prompts on-screen.

You can simply transfer the eSIM on your current phone onto your new one via the Choose a Data Plan screen in Quick Start.

If you're upgrading to an iPhone 13 or above, you can even convert your physical SIM into an eSIM.

Check out our iPhone help pages to see this new step in Quick Start.

If you’re using another device that is compatible with eSIM you can order a replacement SIM by logging in to EE and choosing an eSIM. Otherwise, simply pop your current SIM card into your new device.
