Safer SIMs explainedLearn more about Safer SIMs
EE’s Safer SIMs are specially designed phone plans for children that give parents greater control and peace of mind. With built-in parental controls, scam call protection, and spending limits that can’t be turned off, these plans are tailored to help keep children safer while they are connected to the EE network. Whether you're setting up your child’s first phone or upgrading to something more secure, Safer SIMs are a smart choice for families.
Below are some frequently asked questions to help you understand how Safer SIMs work and what they offer:
To set up EU roaming before you travel, you will need to ensure your child has a Spend Cap set higher than £0. You will then be able to roam at the daily rate until the chosen Spend Cap is reached. Roaming is disabled on the pay as you go Guided plan.
Not while connected to our network, but you will need to ensure that your child’s device is not using a VPN and has Apple Private Relay off (iPhone only). The Safer SIM plans only restrict access whilst using the EE Network. For more complete control, you must also set up broadband parental controls and device level controls (e.g. Google Family Link). Parental controls block access to websites based on content categories but can’t block all content in apps.
On 31 March each year our monthly prices will increase by £4 for broadband, £2 for TV and £2.50 for mobile SIM & Airtime and £1.50 for Connected Devices. Out of bundle charges (such as the charge for making calls outside of your allowance and the EU daily charge) will increase by 5%. See ee.co.uk/prices-explained for details. All prices shown are in contract prices. The cost of other services you take from us may increase or decrease while you are an EE customer.
Safer SIMs SIM Only Plan: 30-day minimum term. Subject to terms and credit check. Monthly charges assume online billing. You will not get 4G speeds using a 3G only phone or 5G speeds using a 3G or 4G phone. Allowances for use in UK (excluding Jersey, Guernsey & Isle of Man) and Republic of Ireland. A daily charge applies to use allowances in the EU/EEA. See roaming costs page for countries and details. 50GB data fair use policy applies outside the UK. See ee.co.uk/terms for countries and details. Deposit needed for roaming in limited circumstances. Use your allowance to call/text UK mobiles, and landlines starting 01, 02 and 03 when in UK & Republic of Ireland. See ee.co.uk/prices for the EE Price Guide for a detailed list of service charges and other charges outside of your allowance. Personal use only. Some service messages, including messages about payments or account management, will be sent only to the user’s EE SIM or eSIM and not the account holder. Safer SIMs plans are not eligible for a multi-line discount.
Protected Safer SIM Only Plan: Includes speeds capped at 0.5Mbps, Stay Connected Data, and default Strict Parental Controls.
Guided Safer SIM Only Plan: Includes speeds capped at 10Mbps, Stay Connected Data, Data Gifting and default Moderate Parental Controls.
Trusted Safer SIM Only: Includes speeds capped at 100Mbps, Stay Connected Data, Data Gifting and default Moderate Parental Controls.
Stay Connected Data: If you have a capped data allowance (i.e. not an unlimited data plan) once you have used up your monthly data allowance your speed will be capped at 0.5Mbps. You will regain access to our fastest speeds upon (1) renewal of your monthly plan allowance, or (2) If you are gifted data by someone else in your family account. Once the data add-on or gifted data runs out, you will return to the capped speed until your monthly plan allowance has renewed. Where Stay Connected Data is provided as part of a Safer SIMs Sim Only Protected Plan, users won’t be able gain access to faster speeds unless data is gifted to the user. Gifted data can be accessed at speeds capped at 10Mbps.
Data gifting: Account holder only can gift between pay monthly plans on the same account in increments of 500MB. Unlimited data plans can gift up to 100GB. Data usage on an unlimited data plan will be deducted from giftable allowance. No gifting to/from Smart Watches, 4G Home, 5G Home or 30-day 4G WiFi or 5G WiFi plans. Data not used in a month does not roll over, allowances are set back to zero at the start of each month. If you are outside your price plan’s standard countries when your monthly allowances refresh on your bill date the main account holder will not be able to gift data until you return to the UK/EU. Data can only be used in accordance with the plan terms applicable to the receiving line.
Parental controls: Parental controls on Safer SIMs Sim Only Protected plans and Safer SIMs Pay as You Go Guided plans are locked to the Strict setting and cannot be changed. Safer SIMs Sim Only Guided and Trusted plans have a default Moderate setting, which can be changed to the Strict setting. Parental controls cannot be removed on any Safer SIMs plans. Parental controls are only active when the device is connected to the EE mobile network and do not work when the device is connected to Wi-Fi, broadband, or another mobile network, and when using a third-party SIM or eSIM. Parental controls do not work when certain privacy or security features are enabled on the device, such as VPNs, Apple Private Relay, or custom DNS settings. Parental controls block access to websites based on content categories but do not block all content in apps. Some adult or inappropriate content may still be accessible, so it’s important to stay aware of your child’s internet use.
Scam Call Protect: Scam Call Protect includes network-level call labelling to detect and alert the user about potential spam and fraud calls. It will start straightaway for all plans and cannot be removed. This service is for personal, non-commercial use.
Safer SIMs Pay As You Go Guided Plan: Pre-loaded data allowances last 30 days or until you have used the data. Once you’ve reached your data allowance, you will need to buy a new data add-on or wait for your plan allowance to reset. Allowances for use in the UK & Republic of Ireland. You will not get 4G speeds using a 3G only phone. Use your allowance to call/text UK mobiles, and landlines starting 01, 02 and 03 when in UK (excluding Jersey, Guernsey & Isle of Man) & Republic of Ireland. See ee.co.uk/prices for the EE Price Guide for a detailed list of service charges and other charges outside of your allowance. All new EE on a Pay As You Go Plans have their speed capped at 25 Mbps. Plan will automatically recur subject to sufficient credit. Plan will be cancelled if it hasn’t recurred within 30 days of previous plan expiry. You can opt out at any time. You must call, text or top-up every 180 days or you will be disconnected, and you’ll lose any credit on your account. Some service messages, including messages about payments or account management, will be sent only to the user’s EE SIM or eSIM and not the account holder. Subject to availability. Personal use only.
