Using an eSIM with a Samsung Galaxy mobile

This article will help you to set up and use an eSIM with your Samsung Galaxy mobile, including how to set up a second line and how to manage your data between lines.

What is an eSIM?

Like a traditional SIM card, an eSIM stores the data your device needs to use the EE network. eSIM means an embedded SIM, but unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM is built into your device.

It also enables multiple calling lines on a device that you can switch between. For example, one for work and one for personal use. It’s also secure - no one can remove the eSIM if your device is lost or stolen.

For details on eSim compatible devices, visit this Samsung web page.

Get an eSIM

There are several ways to get your eSIM set up. You'll need an internet connection to get set up.

If you're new to EE and have ordered an eSIM with your new device directly from us, you’ll either:

  • turn on your new device and follow the prompts to install your eSIM, or
  • scan the QR code in the eSIM pack that was sent with your new device

If you’ve ordered an eSIM for a SIM only plan with us, you can download your eSIM from EE. Follow the instructions in your confirmation email.

Transfer a SIM or eSIM

If you're upgrading to a newer Galaxy model and would like to use an eSIM, or you’re currently using an eSIM and need to transfer it to your new device, you’ll need to order a replacement eSIM. You can:

  1. Log in to EE and order a replacement eSIM (you’ll need your current SIM active to complete the activation – Don't delete or get rid of the old SIM before this). Go to Profile > Settings and permissions > Device and SIM > Replace my SIM/eSIM
  2. call 150 from your EE phone or 0800 956 6000 from an alternative line
  3. pick up an eSIM Pack by visiting an EE store with your ID.

Set up an eSIM

If you’ve been sent a paper QR code, scan it, and the information stored in it will allow us to add the eSIM to your phone safely and securely.

To set up your eSIM line with a QR code:

  • select Settings
  • select Connections
  • select SIM card manager
  • select Add Mobile Plan
  • select Add using QR code
  • take a picture of the QR code on the eSIM pack
    (your camera will automatically open)
  • confirm by pressing Register then OK

If this is a second SIM for your phone, you'll have the option to assign a name and icon for each number on your phone and choose what numbers/plans are used for your data and voice message.

If you can't scan a QR code or your camera is broken

You can manually add the information contained within the QR code if you can't scan it.

Your eSIM pack has the details you need and your unique 32-digit activation code. Alternatively, you can log in to your EE account to see the code there.

About Dual SIM mobiles

Dual SIM means there are two SIM slots within the device - a physical SIM card and an eSIM. Like a traditional SIM card, the eSIM stores data that's needed for your device to use the EE network.

Unlike a SIM card, an eSIM is downloaded onto your device. You can use an eSIM with your Samsung Galaxy devices (as listed above). These phones are also 'Dual SIM'. They have two SIM slots so you can have two numbers and two different plans on the same phone.

If your device is unlocked, you can also use a dual SIM phone to:

  • use foreign SIM and your own SIM at the same time if you're travelling abroad
  • use the same phone for two different numbers on separate networks. For example, a work and personal number.

Setting up your phone if you're using two SIMs

You can set up a Samsung Galaxy Dual SIM device with a combination of:

  • two physical SIMs
  • a physical SIM and an eSIM.

Managing what number to use for calls, messages, data, voice and apps

If you're using two SIMs you can set up which SIM your phone should use for:

  • making and receiving calls
  • data
  • voice features
  • messages
  • apps.

Managing your calls

To choose what lines/numbers are used for calls, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Default Voice Line / Mobile Data.

The phone will warn you if you attempt to make a call from the “non-preferred” SIM.

You cannot have 2 active calls at the same time, for example if you were on the phone and received a call to your other number, that incoming call would go to voicemail.

You can set calls to be forwarded from one line to another.

Data, voice and messages

To choose what SIMs and phone plans are used by default for data, voice and messages go to Settings > Connections > SIM card manager.

Messaging apps

“Dual Messenger” can create a duplicate application for each number, for messaging applications such as Skype or WhatsApp. The option can be found in Settings > Advanced features > Dual messenger.

Lost or stolen device with an active eSIM?

If your Galaxy device with an active eSIM, is lost or stolen, it’s important to contact us and report it immediately. For more information visit Lost or stolen mobile phone.

  2. select Manage
  3. select Mobile & SIMs
  4. scroll to the bottom of the page, select Check settings
