Using 5G Standalone on your mobile

This article helps you with what you need to use EE’s 5G Standalone network or 5G Calling on your mobile.

5G Standalone is the latest evolution of EE’s mobile network, and uses 5G end-to-end, to give you:

  • faster download and upload speeds
  • better network performance in crowded areas, such as stadiums
  • enhanced end-to-end security
  • more power efficiency, so may help with device battery life too

About 5G Standalone

To use 5G Standalone, you will need:

  1. an All Rounder or Full Works pay monthly mobile plan bought after 29 August 2024
  2. a pay monthly handset plan bought after 19 March 2025
  3. a SIM card activated after September 2021 is compatible, or any eSIM 
  4. a compatible device, see the list of devices below   
  5. be in a 5G Standalone coverage area, use our postcode search tool to check your address

Need to know

If your current SIM is not compatible, moving to an eSIM is a quick way to update your SIM. Check if your device is eSIM compatible.

About 5G Calling

As of 6 June 2025, Voice over New Radio (VoNR) or 5G Calling is now available on applicable 5G SA devices.

Only mobiles that are 5G Standalone compatible will be able to use 5G Calling.

How do I enable VoNR on my mobile

To make calls over 5G Standalone, you need to make sure both 5G Standalone and Voice over 5G are switched on:

For iPhones:

  1. go to Settings
  2. select Mobile Service
  3. select Voice & Data
  4. toggle 5G Standalone and Voice Over 5G to on

For Android mobiles

  1. go to Settings
  2. select Connection
  3. select Mobile Networks
  4. set Network Mode to 5G 
  5. toggle VoNR on

 

Need to know

4G Calling is VoLTE (Voice Over LTE), 5G Calling is VoNR (Voice Over New Radio).
