Connecting devices to your hub

This article helps with common problems when connecting devices to your EE hub for the first time, or after an upgrade or replacement.

Try these quick checks first

Start with these checks, as they fix most connection issues:

  • Make sure you're within range of your hub, or move closer to it. If your device is too far away, the signal may be weak.
  • Make sure you’re selecting the correct WiFi network name. Your device may show more than one network, so double-check you’ve chosen the right one.
  • Check that you've used the right network name and password.
  • Forget and re-join the network.
  • Try using Compatible WiFi, which is great for older devices or those that can only connect to specific signal i.e. a digital doorbell
  • Temporarily disable the 5GHZ band in Hub Manager.
  • Check you have installed the latest software updates and drivers.

For devices such as an EE Smart Extender Plus or EE Connectivity Backup, a factory reset could help.

Use the same WiFi network details

Change your hub’s WiFi network name and password to match your old one, and your devices should connect automatically. If they don't, you can change your settings manually.

Change your hub settings using the EE app

  1. Download and open the EE app.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Select Broadband.
  4. Choose Smart Hub.
  5. Select the three dots.
  6. Select Change WiFi settings.
  7. Enter your previous hub's WiFi network name and password, and save it.

Change your settings in Hub Manager

  1. Go to your browser address bar and type 192.168.1.254.
  2. Select Advanced Settings.
  3. Choose Advanced Wireless.
  4. Enter your admin password, which you’ll find on the back of the new hub.
  5. Enter your old hub's network name and security password, then save.

Make a note of your network name and password and keep it somewhere safe. You'll find it on the back of your hub.

Using a cable to connect a device to your hub?

If you’re connecting a device using a cable (Ethernet):

  • Ensure the cable is firmly inserted into the device and the hub, it should click or won’t go in any further.
  • Check you’re using the correct socket. The cable must not be plugged into the socket labelled WAN or Internet. Only use the numbered sockets for connecting devices like computers, TVs or games consoles.
  • Try plugging the cable into a different numbered socket on the hub (for example, move it from port 1 to port 2).
  • Try a different Ethernet cable; the writing on the cable should say Cat 5e, Cat 6, or higher.

If it still doesn’t work

Some newer hubs don’t support older devices with 10 Mbps half-duplex Ethernet ports. If you think your device has one of these ports, you may need to connect it to your hub using a network switch (a small, low-cost Ethernet splitter you can buy separately from most retailers).
