Set up your Digital Home Phone service

This page shows you how to set up your EE Digital Home Phone service. It includes connecting it to your Smart Hub and getting it ready to make and receive calls.

Need to know

If you use a healthcare alarm or medical pendant you must speak to your service provider to confirm it's compatible with Digital Home Phone and then call us to let us know.

Before you start, make sure you have one of our hubs with a green phone port on the back.

You can watch our video or follow these written instructions to set up your Digital Home Phone service. The steps are the same.

We will contact you to let you know what your switchover date is. If you connect your phone to your hub before this date it won’t work

Set up a Digital Home Phone handset

Your Digital Home Phone is designed to work with both EE and BT Smart Hubs. Make sure you set up your hub first. And remember to keep your hub switched on so you can always use your new phone.

You can set up your phone when you get a steady blue or aqua light on the front of your hub. If you have any problems setting up your Digital Home Phone, give it five minutes and then try again. It could be that your hub is updating and needs to finish first.

Powering up the handset
Connect the power cable to the back of the charger base. Only use the power supply unit provided (item code 090713). Plug the other end into the wall socket and switch it on.

Power on your handset
If there is a pull tab attached to the battery compartment, please remove it. Place the handset in the charging base to power on. Alternatively, hold the End call button for 5 seconds.

Linking the handset to the hub

  • press OK on your phone and follow the on-screen steps
  • when asked, press and hold the WPS button on your hub for two seconds
  • the WPS button will flash while the phone and hub are linking, and the phone will show it’s registering. Depending on your Smart Hub version, the WPS button may be located on the side or back of your hub
  • press OK on your phone and follow the on-screen steps

Software downloads

Once your phone is linked to your hub and is registered, it might need to download a software update. Let it do that, and then continue with the setup.

Add some contacts

When asked, press Yes to add some contacts, and follow the on-screen steps. Or skip and do it later by pressing No.

Making emergency calls

You won’t be able to call 999 (or any other numbers) from this phone if there’s a power outage or you have a problem with your broadband connection. So make sure you’ve got another way to call for help in an emergency. If you have a Battery Back Up unit to support your Digital Home Phone in a power outage, your phone will continue to work, provided it is charged.

Charge up fully

Now you’ve set up your phone, it’s a good idea to let it charge fully. Just put it on the charger base for up to 16 hours.

Set up a new/replacement hub with Digital Home Phone

Need to know

If you have received a new hub, please ensure you unpair your handsets from your old hub and re-pair them to the new hub supplied.

If we have sent you a new hub with your Digital Home Phone service, it’s important that you unpair any handsets from the old hub and connect them with the new hub. Here are the steps to follow to do that.

To unpair handsets from a hub using Smart Hub Manager

  1. open a web browser
  2. connect to your old hub via WiFi or by cable
  3. go to http://192.168.1.254/PhoneScreen/phone-manager
  4. scroll down the list to the handset you want to unpair
  5. select Deregister

You can follow the same steps to unpair/pair any Digital Home Phone Adapter you may be using.

Set up a wired phone handset

Setting up a handset near your hub

Plug the handset's phone cable directly into the green phone port on the back of the hub.

Setting up a handset away from your hub

Use a Digital Home Phone Adapter to:

  • set up your handset away from the hub
  • use additional handsets with a cord
  • use your wireless handset base unit away from the hub

We'll send you a Digital Home Phone adapter. It connects wirelessly to your hub and works like an extension socket. Find out how to set up and use a Digital Home Phone Adapter. Once setup, your adapter can be unplugged from the mains and set up where you want your phone.

Need to know

Don't plug any healthcare alarms or medical pendants into a Digital Home Phone Adapter. You must plug compatible devices into the green phone port on the back of your hub.

Please speak to your alarm provider for guidance.

Set up a wireless handset with a base unit

If you have a wireless handset with one main base unit and additional handsets, plug the main base unit’s phone cable into the phone port on the back of the hub. Also, ensure you plug the base unit into your mains socket for power.

The other handsets will work as usual.

You can also use a Digital Home Phone Adapter to position your base unit wherever you want it and connect wirelessly to your hub.

If your phone doesn’t ring

Phones bought before 2015 may not ring while connected to your Digital Home Phone adapter. Follow steps to check why your phone doesn't ring or you can't make outbound calls.

Using Digital Home Phone in a power cut

Your Smart Hub needs power to make calls using Digital Home Phone.

A battery back up will keep your Smart Hub working in a power cut. This will keep your home phone working for at least an hour. You might want to have a battery back up if you don’t have a mobile phone.
