How can I test my broadband speed?

How can I test my broadband speed?

To run a test, make sure your router’s connected to your home’s master socket (it’ll look like one of the sockets in the pictures below).

1. Disconnect your device from WiFi and connect it directly to your router using an Ethernet cable

2. Shut down any devices that might be using your connection (including smart TVs and mobile phones)

3. Open the BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test (it only works if you have Flash installed – if none of your devices support Flash, use Speedtest by Ookla instead)

4. Click the Yes tick box and the Begin Test button to test your speed

5. Once complete, the site will show the results of your download and upload tests

What does my test result mean?

Your test result will show a download speed and an upload speed (see below). Ignore the ping latency.

Compare your result with your estimated speed

To see if your speeds are slow, you need to compare results with the estimated speed you should be getting.

My test speed is lower than my estimated range

If you tested with a WiFi connection, first try connecting your device directly to your router with an Ethernet cable and try the test again.

If you were using a wired connection the first time, find out how to improve your broadband speed.

My test speed is within my estimated range

There are still a couple of things you can try to speed things up:

If your device was connected to a WiFi network during the test, find out how to improve your wireless speed.

If you were using a wired connection during the test:

  •

    restart your router

  •

try a second test with another device to check the problem’s not with the device you used for the first test

  •

switch off peer-to-peer services (such as BitTorrent) as these can hog a lot of bandwidth

If your problem still isn’t solved, please get in touch.

My test speed is lower than my minimum guaranteed speed

  •

click 'Run further diagnostics' on the test and enter your phone number. This will log your test on our system and our team will investigate

  •

Please note: You have the right to cancel if our diagnostics show that you’re not getting the minimum guaranteed speed.
